The residential duplex, built in the 1920s, was originally slated for demolition based on a demolition order. However, a perceptive investor accepted our arguments for repurposing the existing structure for a new function. The new layout and window openings could be implemented without any issues thanks to the building’s skeletal construction. This allowed us to preserve the craft-rich elements of the building, such as stone cladding, the historical staircase, decorative elements, and ribbed monolithic ceilings. We were able to maintain the authenticity and craftsmanship, qualities that are no longer easily accessible today. Our conceptual contribution lay in the approach to authenticity as a value, in the brightening of the layout, and in the investment savings from avoiding demolition and rebuilding the basic structure.
